If your infant or child has frequent vomiting, a persistent cough, or difficulty eating, he or she may be suffering from acid reflux or gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). In these conditions, stomach acid flows backward from the stomach into the esophagus. This causes pain and damages the esophageal lining.

GER does not cause any problems in babies. This is called gastroesophageal reflux. A small amount of gastroesophageal reflux is normal in young infants. However, ongoing reflux with frequent vomiting can irritate the esophagus and make the infant fussy. Severe reflux that causes weight loss or breathing problems is not normal. Babies with normal reflux will spit up milk or formula, whereas it stays in the esophagus for infants with silent reflux.
